BREAKING! labour to embark on nationwide strike on 31st December

Organized labour has threatened to embark on nationwide strike if the government fails to transmit minimum wage to the national assembly.
Labour leaders have again threatened to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to transmit the new minimum wage structure to the National Assembly on or before December 31, 2018, Channels Television has revealed.
The leaders who met in Lagos on Thursday said they will not be part of the planned High-Powered Technical Committee as announced by President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2019 budget presentation.
They insisted that all discussions have ended on the new minimum wage as the labour union has since taken a stand.
This comes just a day after President Muhammadu Buhari told the National Assembly that he will send a bill on the implementation of the new minimum wage, soon.
He said this while presenting the 2019 Budget proposal before the joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday.
The President said: “We have included the implementation for the National Minimum Wage. I will be sending a Bill to this National Assembly, on this.”

He added that he had directed the setting up of a technical committee to look at the mode of implementation.

PLATFORM We should speak Isoko Language anywhere otherwise the Language may go into extinction--Araka

Chief John Araka is the former editor, Daily Times, former general manager Daily Times, a media entrepreneur; he was a media consultant to the ex-governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan and Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru in the political arena respectively. He was recently appointed Chairman for the Isoko Cultural day celebration. In this interview with the publisher and the Isoko Regional Editor, he highlighted reasons why we must continue speaking Isoko language and to also display our cultural values with some other salient issues
Excerpt
Can we meet you sir?
My name is Chief John Araka, a journalist, a Fellow of Nigeria Guild of Editor, former editor Daily Times, former general manager Daily Times, a media entrepreneur. I also work as a media consultant to the former governor of Delta State, Dr.Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan and Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru in the political arena.
I am also a Public Relations consultant to companies like NDDC, Skyward Resources Nigeria Ltd and so many others. All my life is media.

Sir, you are the chairman committee Isoko Cultural Day celebration. What are we expecting from the event?
The whole idea of Isoko cultural day is to revive our culture. Culture is the totality of the way of life. The Isoko culture is dying because we are not proud of our culture, we are always trying to imitate the culture of the major ethnic groups instead of our own culture.
What you will see on the Isoko cultural day are some of those things our forefathers value dearly during their time on earth and we want to revive them again.
On that day we are going to demonstrate our method of farming, our various festivals, respect for elders. The Isoko people have respect for elders, hardworking, In Isoko culture we don't beg, no matter the circumstances, the Isoko person,s must have something doing. The begging culture of this days were the youths will be begging 'Ose,Ose' those are the things we want to eliminate from our culture, that act is the bastardization of the Isoko culture. We must go back to the Isoko culture of hardworking and honesty.
Especially in the area of diligence and hardworking, one of the reasons why our young boys and girls are doing funny things is because they don't believe in hardworking which our forefathers believes-in. In those days our fathers and mothers will wake up in the morning and go to their place of work and come back in the evening fulfilled.
Also, the Isoko woman is one of the best woman you can ever marry, once an Isoko woman is married, even if you marry her from the brothel, from the day you marry her, you are 100 percent sure your woman is safe because of the Isoko culture. The Isoko woman have respect for marital values.
Another area is, contentment because In those days our values were such that, if an Isoko man build a room and parlor he will be happy with it. If all he can afford is a white bicycle he is satisfied. And contentment is the greatest thing you can get in this world, you don't need to think of how you can commit crimes and get rich overnight. These are the kind of things we want to display on that day.
The Isoko people have a very rich cultural heritage that was able to defiled the monstrous colonial influence, but over the years the Isoko culture is dying.
In what ways the Isoko culture can  be revive and preserve?
There should be yearly cultural day celebration in Isoko. In fact, it shouldn't be only in Isoko, it should be done in other towns where we have Isoko Development Union (IDU) branches all over the world, in their own small ways they should also organise Isoko cultural day to revive the Isoko culture. And they must ensure that they don't trade the Isoko culture with another one.
Chief John Araka
Also, the various Isoko communities have what they call festivals .For instance, we have Owise Owhe festival, Olihor festival in Oleh, the Uzere Eni festival, the Ikelike festival in Enhwe etc. But because of our misunderstanding of Christianity we equate our festivals with idol worship. Our culture is imbedded in this festivals, so, we shouldn't see the festivals as idol worship. We are not celebrating idols, it is our culture.
How are you going to mobilise the 19 clans to the event?
At least 100 persons each from each clan in Isoko, they will dress in their own unique way, match, dance and display their various culture.
Sir, the Isoko Positive Agenda just organized a seminar on the sustenance of Isoko language. What informed the group desire to organize the seminar?
We are worried especially the Isoko older generation that our language is dying. Language is the most important components of culture, language gives you identity. It is most painful that even within Isoko here, people that are born and bred in Isoko cannot speak the Isoko language. Our old men and women who are not even educated instead of speaking the Isoko language to their children they speak pidgin English to them.
They see it as a status symbol if you speak English language. This can only happen with the minority ethnic groups like Isoko. You see the Yorubas, Igbos and Hausas ,even if they have their children in London, USA or anywhere in the world they still speak their language to their children, their language is first and foremost. But in Isoko here, our language is dying, some of our people are even ashamed to speak the Isoko language. If we are not careful in the next 30 to 50 years the Isoko language will go into extinction and that will be the greatest calamity that will befall us as a people.
That is why the Isoko Positive Agenda felt there should be a deliberate effort to revive, sustain and preserve the language. Before now, IPA were running a programme on Quest FM every Sunday to ensure the sustainability of the language and sensitized our people to be proud of the Isoko language.
We should speak our language anywhere in the world, parents should ensure they speak the language to their children in order for the language not to go into extinction.
Why does the average Isoko man sees Isoko language as language that cannot be used to contribute to modernity, globalization, politically, economically, technologically and scientifically?
I think it is inferiority complex, like I said earlier, when the people begin to think that their language is inferior, they are ashamed to speak it in the presence of others. Some parents think it is shameful to speak the Isoko language at home to their children.
For us to use the language as science, politically or as a language of development, we must begin to speak the language continuously. We can also borrow from other languages and adapt it into our own situation that is how the language will grow .For instance, the English language borrowed from other languages all over the world, from Latin, French, Spanish etc.
There are some herbs our forefathers knows their names, but today many of us now don't know the names of those herbs because we don't speak the Isoko language. That's why we have to work very hard to sustain the language and allow it to grow.
It is no longer a secret that the Isoko language is dying ,you know as one language dies a chapter of human culture and history closes. What are the bold steps IPA will take again after the seminar to revive the Isoko language?
We are taken several steps, we are going to appeal to all Isoko people, that anywhere they are, there should be a deliberate policy that Isoko language should be their lingua franca in their homes, no matter the education, whether you are a professor or you have PHD, let them speak the Isoko language to their children. We want to encourage our people that in any Isoko event to speak the Isoko language.
We are going to organise Isoko language competition among primary schools and secondary schools, churches in Isoko and even those in diaspora. If we take such steps, it will help the language to grow.
Is the government doing enough to promote the minority language?
Not at all, because most of the people in government especially at the Federal level are majority. It is not the duty of the government, it is the duty of the indigenes of the minority ethnic groups to ensure their language survive. The best thing we can do as an ethnic group is to urge the government  to include our language in the school academic curriculum.
Recently you were appointed chairman of Hon. Joel Onowakpo campaign council. How bright is the chances of Hon. Onowakpo come February, 2019, Federal House of Reps election?
Hon. Joel Onowakpo chances are extremely brigh , a  good product is very easy to sell, a good product in the sense that if you look at his background, this is a man who started from nowhere. He was able to educate himself, presently he is one of the best in his Profession, a respected chartered account all over the world.
He became the chairman of the Delta Board of internal Revenue (DBIR) and later Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) coordinating three State, namely Edo, Delta, River with credible performance and achievements. He is also a successful businessman. More importantly, he has use his position to help the Isoko people, giving scholarships to Isoko indigenes. I was overwhelmed that he still organize Jamb lectures and enrollment  for Isoko Students. It has help to lift so many people from illiteracy to literacy level.
In terms of given employment he has given jobs to many Isoko people. He is not making noise about it. Somebody who has been doing this on his own, if they give him the opportunity to represent us, he will do better. We want Hon. Onowakpo to go there and do things differently and he has promise to do that. He is not going there to enrich himself or award contracts to himself and his family, he is already a wealthy man. He is going there, so that, when constituency projects comes all the 19 clans in Isoko will benefit from it, so that the people can feel the impact.

We are going to educate the Isoko people and extricate them from the undue influence of those who have been deceiving them over the years. Whoever think that Hon. Joel Onowakpo is not going to win is leaving in the past, because in the past they were writing results, now we are going to deploy technology in this election, in the past the votes did not count, but I can assure you this time around the votes will count.
This election is not PDP vs APC,I t is the election of the Isoko people who want to free themselves from the monarchy.
Isoko homeland is a key provider of present day Nigeria nation's wealth -crude oil petroleum, but there is nothing to show for it, no Federal presence why?
The reasons is because of poor leadership. How can you have federal presence? When the man representing us awarded all the contracts to himself and his family. How can we develop when the political elites collect contracts, collect the money without executing the projects. We must blame the political elites whom out of selfishness don't think of Isoko progress but only what will benefit them and their family.
What is your message for the Isoko people?
If you look at the average Isoko people they are extremely educated. We should not allow ourselves to be enslave by anybody, we should be free thinkers. We should also know that we are the architect of our own misfortune.

Whatever we need to do cannot be done by any other people, but the Isoko people. And we must work assiduously so that Isoko nation will grow from strength to strength.

Inspector heads robbery gang, cheats member of n2.8m: suspect storms police station, surrenders self to expose crooked SARS officer

It was like a scene straight out of a movie script, when a stranger, later dubbed Police informant, sauntered into the office of the operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Lagos State Police Command, located at the Ikeja, GRA, and gleefully announced, “I’m a robber! My gang stole the missing truck and container, with its N147million worth of goods.”
If the informant was trying to get the operatives’ attention, he definitely did. Seasoned operatives, who had seen and been to hell, looked coldly at him, with their stares almost boring holes into his face and body.
The informant squirmed in trepidation, but he had come prepared. He knew that right then, there was no going back. For him, going back was as difficult as going forward. He took the plunge and his words jumped, stumbled and tumbled over each other as he tried to tell his story.
The informant was quickly ushered into the office of Philip, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) in charge of the IRT Unit in Lagos State.
After several minutes drilling under the unrelenting gaze of Philip, the story came pouring out of the informant. Yes, he truly was an armed robber. The operatives, who had seen a lot of characters in their line of work, knew there was a catch somewhere in his story and his willingness to surrender himself to the police.
The informant told them he came to surrender himself to the police because he wanted to be punished for his crimes, but he quickly added that he was not alone in the robbery operations.
He told Philip and other operatives that a police Inspector, identified as Mr. Asom Ubi, working with Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), was the leader of the gang.
As the man further revealed the gang’s modus of operandi and the sharing formula of loots, the suspected catch in his surrendering himself, fell into place. The puzzle was complete.
He was a robbery suspect allegedly cheated by Ubi. Vexed at being cheated, the informant decided to hand himself to IRT operatives, just to ensure that Ubi was also arrested.
According to him, he felt that if he went to SARS office at Police Command, Ubi might be allowed to go free since he was part of the SARS’s family, thus he chose IRT.
A police source said: “Ubi is among SARS operatives that newly joined the Lagos State Police Command. He has only spent a month at SARS, Ikeja, before he was posted to Onireke Police Station, after the police outpost was created. He was drafted there, and being the most senior person there, he was made the Station Officer (SO).”
Since Ubi started working there, different kinds of allegations had been trailing his footsteps. One of the allegations was that Ubi used to disappear from his duty post for more than two weeks or more. Whenever he was about to do his vanishing act, he goes with his rifle.
This rifle, according to a source at Onireke Police Station, was always in his car, contrary to police rules. Every policeman was expected to keep his rifle at the station’s armoury when leaving for home.
In the middle of this year, a truck, carrying 40 feet container, loaded with GNLD products was snatched. Two weeks after this truck disappeared, the stranger walked into IRT office. He declared that he was a robber and also had information for the police about the missing truck.
He met Philip and further told him that he was involved in the snatching of the truck. According to him, he was among those that snatched it. He promised to lead operatives of IRT to where the truck was kept.
The source disclosed: “When he was further quizzed, he said that they were a seven-man-gang that carried out the operation of robbing the truck driver and confiscating the products. He added that the operation was led by a police Inspector, attached to SARS, serving at Onireke police outpost.”
A stunned Philip was said to have quickly dispatched his men to Onireke, where Ubi was arrested. It was further alleged that Ubi confessed to the crime.
Acting swiftly on the heels of the informant’s information and Ubi subsequent arrest, Philip and his men embarked on intense investigation, leading to police invitations being sent to the driver and conductor of the stolen truck.
“The driver and conductor were brought for identification. The driver identified Ubi. The driver explained that the gang members bundled him and his conductor into the boot of a private car and later dropped them off along Ibadan Express Way. He said that they were robbed at night along Ikorodu road and that the gang made away with the truck and container,” said the police source.
The source further said: “When the container was snatched, the gang went to Alaba International Market to sell the product. The gang also sold the truck and container. They sold the product for N45 million, but it was actually worth N147 million. Ubi told the police that he got N6.5 million in the deal. The informant was given just N150, 000. The informant felt the money given to him was too small. He approached Ubi and complained. Attempting to placate the informant, Ubi told him that the money the gang made from the robbery was not enough, stressing that the buyer was yet to finish payment. Not satisfied, the informant went to complain to other members of the gang.
“Other gang members told him that his share was actually N3 million and that it was handed over to Ubi. He went back to Ubi, but Ubi denied, insisting that the other gang members were lying. Angry and feeling cheated, the informant decided to give himself up to the police just to ensure that Ubi was arrested. So, on that fateful day, he walked into IRT office and announced to anyone who cared to listen that he was an armed robber. He was ready to go down and wanted to drag Ubi with him.”
A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, in charge of IRT nationwide, said that although he was aware of the arrest of Ubi, he didn’t know or have the facts of the case.

JUST IN!! Late Alex Badeh’s wife and sons to miss his burial after DSS and immigration place them on the watchlist

Badeh’s widow, Mary Iya Badeh, and his two sons, Alex (jnr) and Kam have been in the United States since 2016 following his prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Late. Alex Badeh
A family friend of the Badehs who spoke with punchng said that it was unlikely if they would come. He said, “I have spoken with them and I don’t know for now if they will be coming but it is highly unlikely. Their father has just been killed under controversial circumstances and the government has not removed them from the watch list. if they return and their passports are seized and they are not allowed to return, it would be a double tragedy. everybody is still in shock so we cannot say for now if they will be coming but since they are Christians, there is no rush. A lot can happen before then.”

A prosecution witness, Abubakar Madaki, had told a Federal High Court sitting In Maitama that Badeh’s wife and two of his children were being investigated for offences with which the ex-Chief of Air Staff was charged. Madaki said the three of them, however, escaped to the united states before the investigation was concluded. He said all attempts to get them arrested turned out to be futile.

Editorial The move to kick-start orientation of our political narratives is now

Changing the political narratives and directives is a process that must be carried out by both politicians and electorates through a people oriented democratic process that must entails principle of justice and fair play by all.
The electorates must begin in earnest  to look for the decent politician or leader who has sense
of decorum and humility and sensitive to the plight and aspirations of the people so as to build a relationship of confidence on each other.
The 2014 staggered election of Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections brought some kind of hope and confidence by INEC to Nigerians and international communities, was an indication that Nigeria as a country was getting it right gradually because in those elections, the electorates voted for the candidates of their choice without intimidation and this was attested to by the international observers who monitored the two states elections. Having seen the fairness and level playing ground provided for the participating parties by INEC, the then incumbent governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi without any fray nerves congratulated the governor elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose without any form of litigations.
But the 2018 staggered elections of the above two states recently conducted by INEC, without mincing words, has brought some kind of regrets and lack of confidence to Nigerians, including the international communities because the states elections were characterized by intimidations and vote buying, as result, there are ongoing litigations, meaning there are lapses and all concerned stakeholders are beginning to get worry over 2019 general elections.
It is our considered opinion that, changing the narratives, we must understand what is good governance and what it takes to run a good government and changing the orientation of the electorates towards that requires a lot of education and sensitization by genuine civil society groups and other stakeholders who are sensitive to the plight and aspirations of the people towards good governance.
Candidly speaking, we know it is herculean task that need every genuine stakeholder’s effort to get the right orientation among the people.
Recently Hon Rita Orji, member representing Ajeromi Ifelodun federal constituency had suggested in a fora that the only way out is for the decent politician and electorate to come together and work collectively for the progress of the nation democratic process because changing the narratives in the current day politics will attract enemies and therefore advised that the era of go and make money without quality leadership and representation must be jettison by all. She noted that the decent politician might not be rich, but changing the political narratives is to ensure that the electorates must not have the mindset of selling their votes, while in different foras, Dr. Vincent Omovusu and president of the Isoko Development Union (IDU) Women’s wing, Lagos branch, Mrs. Mary Nwaru had advocated for good governance and urged the electorates to vote for credible candidates with impeccable characters come 2019 general elections.
Therefore we appealed to all our political leaders, including other stakeholders to come together and work collectively by continually educating and sensitizing the electorates on the need to vote for the right persons without enticement and inducement by money bags politicians to have moral standard to ask for good governance to help our democratic process.

I vanished as attackers closed in on palace

There has been uneasy calm in Agbarho Kingdom, Delta State since last Sunday after irate youths, with the support of a section of elders and other villagers, laid siege to the palace of their monarch, HRM Samson Ogugu I, Osuivie of Agbarho, who bolted away for his dear life.

24 hours later, the people installed a parallel king, HRM William Onokpite. Special Adviser to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Peace and Conflict Resolution, Chief Edwin Uzor, has had sleepless nights since then trying to manage what could pass as a traditional coup. HRM Ogugu I, officially recognized by the state government, is reportedly exploring several options, including dialogue and legal, to regain his throne.
The monarch, who fled the palace when he got wind of the invasion, was star-crossed, as the invading youths seized his staff of office. When one of our reporters visited the community on Monday, stern- looking policemen and soldiers, including the Agbarho vigilante outfit, were sighted at strategic locations at the palace environs and gate, while vehicular movement on the road leading to the palace was grounded. Soldiers restricted movement at the gate, but some chiefs and youths were seen near the shrine in the palace which was under lock and key. Protracted feud Truth, however,  is that HRM Ogugu I has been embroiled in a running battle with his subjects over his leadership style and other allegations since he mounted the throne and all efforts to resolve the dispute proved unsuccessful. Agbarho kingmakers, otherwise called “Usueches” from the various royal families had, months ago, reportedly served the monarch a letter calling for his dethronement over alleged gross misconduct. An influential leader of the community, Major General Orho Obada (ret.), who is the arrowhead of the emergence of Ogugu I, has allegedly  turned his back against him, while the Agbarho-Urhobo Improvement Union, AUIU, which is supposed to be working together with the king to develop the community, is also at loggerheads with him.
They want me dead – HRM Ogugu I But, last Sunday was not the first time the monarch would escape from the Agbarho palace. Armed youths had overrun the palace some months ago. But the incident of last Sunday took many by surprise as many villagers were still in church for their weekly services when youths, shooting sporadically into the air, marched into the palace.
HRM Ogugu I, who spoke to journalists at a location outside his kingdom on Monday, same day a parallel king was installed, said, “Some persons wanted me dead so that they can install a new king, who will be taking authority from them.  I have not committed any offence against individuals or the kingdom. But a cabal in the community wants me dead at all costs. “They sent assassins to kill me in broad daylight with guns. They shot sporadically into the air in my palace. But my God saved me from their hands. “I learnt some armed youths were coming to the palace and, barely 30 minutes after, they were at the palace, but I had to vanish. My two wives were held at gunpoint and my traditional beads, worth millions, were stolen, including my staff of office, given to me by Delta State government. “My security detail was beaten up, my children’s laptops were stolen and property worth over N30 million were collected from the palace. The matter is before the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, and Urhobo Traditional Rulers Council under the chairmanship of the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom”. ‘Security agents took sides’   The under attack monarch went on, “Soldiers and policemen, who came to my palace to maintain the peace saw these thugs and youths with arms but did nothing.
No arrest was made because they got a directive from a top military officer who is against me. This is illegal and unjust. “From what my wife told me, the gunmen ransacked and carted away millions of naira. Nobody has the monopoly of violence and if I respond to their rascality in equal measure, the whole Agbarho town will run. And I do not want to do that because I am a man of peace. “I am calling on Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the state Commissioner of Police and President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the matter and arrest anybody behind the palace coup, attempting to kill and overthrow a government authorized king at gunpoint. “It is a pity the police in Agbarho have compromised and while my palace was overrun by the gunmen, the police were with them, celebrating my palace invasion with the gunmen and their masterminds”.
A source loyal to the deposed king corroborated his claims, saying, “Agbarho is in the grips of criminals and ritualists. His ordeal is sponsored by those who do not like his opposition to their illegality.” He added, “The Okparegbe sub-clan condemned the action of the Usueches and pledged their allegiance to the monarch. “At a recent general meeting, 14 communities of Awwredjan and Okpategbe sub clans unanimously passed a vote of confidence on HRM Ogugu 1.”

There has been crisis since Ogugu I ascended the throne – Gbenedio President General of Agbarho Urhobo Improvement Union, who the monarch fingered as one of the brains behind his ordeal, Chief Ighoteguono Gbenedio, when contacted, narrated the incident. He said, “I was in church when the Special Adviser to the Governor on Peace and Conflict Resolution, Chief Edwin Uzor, called me to say that there was trouble in the kingdom. I told him I was in church and will find out what was happening. “I made some calls and l was told that they whole place is scattered. There has been one trouble or the other with the present monarch since he assumed office, but the whole Agbarho said the kingdom will not divide because the other sub-clan had threatened to install their own king. “So, the youth, who do not want the kingdom to split because of one man, took over the palace. I think that is what happened; the community owns the palace”. Gbenedio, who said he visited the palace thereafter, said he saw policemen and soldiers at strategic positions within and around the place, and youths, who insisted they would not leave.
