Nigerian Grandmother convicted in London for circumcising grandchild without parents’ consent

A 70-year-old Nigerian pharmacist and a devout Christian who posed as the mother of her 11-month-old grandson so he could be circumcised without his parents’ consent has been sentenced to fourteen months imprisonment, suspended for eighteen months.
Martina Obi-Uzom was entrusted to look after the child while his parents were away over the weekend of September 2 to 3, 2017.

She used the opportunity to travel to London and employ the skills of a Jewish mohel – a Jew trained in the practice of circumcision – to get the child circumcised, determined he conform to her Nigerian Christian beliefs.

Obi-Uzom was accompanied by a male friend and filled in a consent form, duping the mohel into believing they were the boy’s parents.

The boy’s mother was furious when she found out and reported Obi-Uzom to the police, Inner London crown court heard.

Obi-Uzom, who runs a pharmacy in Clacton-on-Sea, was acquitted at trial of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm but was convicted by a jury of unlawful wounding.

She was sentenced to fourteen months imprisonment, suspended for eighteen months at Inner London Crown Court. She was also ordered to pay £1500 costs and a £140 victim surcharge.

The court heard she recruited a male to pose as the child’s father and travelled to Golders Green, north-west London, while the child’s parents were away.

When she arrived she signed the parental consent form, which was accepted on face value by the mohel.

Judge Freya Newbery told her: ‘You have a Christian belief in circumcision that has great cultural and religious significance to you.

‘You wanted the boy circumcised and the mother of the boy did not agree with you.

‘She and the boy’s father went away for the weekend and they left you both of their children to look after and you booked the Jewish mohel to perform the circumcision.

‘You went with a male friend and pretended to be the parents of this boy and the mohel took on face value the parental consent form.

‘The circumcision was a significant physical step with irreversible consequences.’

The judge added that ‘there was no parental consent’ however, and ‘that is what is missing here.

He said: ‘You imposed your will, ignoring the mother’s objections to the circumcision and as the boy’s father describes it was a massive violation.

‘Circumcision can only be lawful with the consent of parents.

There is high culpability here, plus the vulnerability of the boy and this was planned and carefully organised.

‘You acted quickly to bring into effect your will, using the deceit that I have found you have.

‘It was an arrogant, imperious decision for what you wanted in place of the mother. It was a serious breach of trust.

‘The probation officer you spoke to found the offence was controlling and manipulative on your part.’

Judge Newbery said the offence merited a prison sentence, but there were circumstances that allowed her to suspend it.

‘I accept your intention in your mind wasn’t to harm the boy and you are a woman of impeccable character,‘ he said.

‘You have worked in the community promoting the needs of less fortunate children. You are a professional person, a pharmacist, highly qualified and devoted to your family.

‘Both of the parents gave evidence and there has been a deep impact on you because of these criminal proceedings, but you brought it on yourself.

‘As a pharmacist I recognise your profession is under jeopardy as is potentially your ability to travel to family in America with this conviction.’

Flood overruns Warri, victims cry over losses

.............Tidi, Omatsuli promise government’s intervention

By Rita Ossai

The Oil City of Warri in Delta State, was on Friday September 6, overran by flood, following the rains that fell for most part of Thursday afternoon and night, till Friday morning.
Areas affected included large expanse of Ekurede-Itsekiri Community, Ubeji Community, Ugbori Community, Olomu Street, Ighorue Street, Okumagba Avenue, Okumagba Estate, Ode-Kporo Quarters Okere, Ginuwa, Esisi, Upper Erejuwa and Swamp Roads.

Worst hit was Ekurede-Itsekiri Community, where residential houses, shops, undeveloped plots and business premises, were literarily  submerged, leaving some inhabitants of the densely populated community trapped in their various homes, as they tried to rescue some of their belongings.

Observers were worried that should the prediction of heavy rains cum flood for the months of September and October by NIMET, becomes reality, then major parts of Warri would be totally submerged.

A team comprising Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Dr. Michael Tidi and the Commissioner representing Itsekiri Ethnic Nationality in the Board of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, Hon. Griftson Omatsuli, which went round Warri to ascertain the extent of the flood, identified causes of the flood to include blocked drains, indiscriminate dumping of wastes and erection of structures on natural water-ways.
Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Dr. Michael Tidi, while reacting to the flood situation, stated that the political will to tackle the flood was not lacking in the state government as the Okowa administration had previously set up a committee to tackle the problem.

Dr. Tidi advised those directly affected by the flood to seek temporary abodes with their relatives as efforts were on going to address the flood headlong.

Hon. Griftson Omatsuli on his part, assured that the management of DESOPADEC, will immediately deploy materials with a view to opening up blocked drains and water channels, so as to mitigate the situation.

Snakes take over Nigerian Polytechnic, as female student flees bathroom naked

Palpable fear and anxiety have gripped staff and students of Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, as dangerous snakes have allegedly taken over the institution.
Students, canteen operators and other members of staff who work or reside on the campuses of the federal tertiary Institution, have reportedly sighted the dangerous and poisonous visitors now laying ambush in ceilings, offices, hostels, bathrooms and other places.

It was gathered that thick darkness occasioned by power outage worsened the situation, making it difficult for the hapless students to see the lurking snakes.

The students, who described the situation as worrisome, called on the management of the institution to fumigate the entire campuses, to forestall a possible attack on the students.

It was learnt that a female student who was bathing, narrowly escaped being bitten when a snake suddenly dropped from the ceiling of the bathroom. She had to run out of the bathroom naked.

A student who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they now lived in their hostels in constant fear and anxiety.

“We now live in fear over the recent discovery of snakes in the hostels.

“We now live in fear in this hostel. Snakes were found and killed yesterday in one of the girl’s hostels. Snakes are now everywhere and nothing is being done about it.

“Somebody was bathing and a snake almost fell on her. She ran out naked, she was very lucky.

“Snakes are just everywhere as you see this hostel, even in the portals, offices, snakes have taken over, we are just confused. They will not give us light to see or read despite the fact that some of us are writing exams.

“We are begging the school management to come to our aid and fumigate everywhere so we can be peaceful,” she said.

The Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr. Mustapha Osahiobugie, denied the alleged invasion of reptile in the institution.

He disclosed that two giant generators were set aside for the students to ensure adequate power supply in their hostels.

“Whether there is BEDC power or not, we have two giant generators set aside for students alone so that they can have adequate power supply.

“Our hostel building is two storeys. We do spot check every week and none of our ceilings is compromised. The roofs are well covered, so, how will a snake now fall from the ceiling?

“On the environment as it relates to sanitation, the horticulture staff are fully in charge, but I will inform them right away to go and check the sports complex and every area concerned,” he added

16 children develop 'werewolf syndrome' after taking contaminated medication on Spain's Costa del Sol

Sixteen children have developed 'werewolf syndrome' after taking contaminated medicine in Spain.
The infants have hypertrichosis - hair growth throughout their bodies - after taking a formula tainted with minoxidil, an alopecia remedy.

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products ordered that several batches from Farma-Química Sur SL, a Malaga-based pharmaceuticals company, be taken out of circulation on July 11.

The babies were given tainted omeprazole, used to treat acid reflux and indigestion, as part of a formula.

Health sources told El Pais it was noted that when the children stopped taking the medicine their hair growth subsided.

Parents have been advised to seek medical help if their child has been given the formula and check with their pharmacy if they have purchased an affected lot.

The Spanish agency pulled a first batch off the market last month when 13 cases were reported.

Another three reports were made at the start of this month and another batch of Farma-Química Sur's medicine was pulled from pharmacy shelves.

Officials believe the contamination could have affected up to 30 Andalusian pharmacies and more than 50 batches of the drug.

Farma-Química Sur has had its licence suspended and cannot manufacture, import or distribute drugs.

The pharmaceuticals company has a supplier in India and it is reported by Granada Hoy, the contamination was made at source.

Spanish authorities say that the issue is isolated to the formulas for children and that adults taking omeprazole capsules should not worry about developing 'werewolf syndrome.'

According to Global News, once children stop taking the contaminated medicine, they should see a reversal of any hypertrichosis symptoms.

Rt. Hon.(Dr) Martins Okonta: Determined to change the face of water sector in Delta

By Emuji Magnus

Leadership in service delivery requires certain key innate attributes from every good leader, and one of such is that of sincere commitment to duty. In realising such commitment, it is expected that one must be pragmatic and proactive in his or her approach in service delivery to be able to effectively deliver on his or her mandate. These qualities are visibly manifesting in the person of RT. Hon.(Dr) Martins Okonta, the new Delta State Commissioner for Water Resources Development.
Barely few minutes after His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor of Delta State, assigned port-folio to him on the August 1, 2019 as the commissioner for Water Resources Development, Rt. Hon. Martins Okonta, decided to hit the ground running by officially assuming duty.
The early assumption of duty, no doubt, is an indication that as the right man for the job who would consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor, Sir Okenmor Fidelis Tilije, Rt. Hon.(Dr) Okonta is not unaware of the task ahead.
In his determination to change the narratives in the water sector, in tandem with the expectations of Deltans, especially the Governor, Rt. Hon.(Dr) Martins Okonta, an astute administrator, vibrant law maker, one time Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and Special Adviser to the Governor as well as a pragmatic legal practitioner whose tenure as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly witnessed vibrant activities of legislations, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Martins Okonta’s appointment could be described as a round peg in a round hole as he harps on the burning desire to operate an open door policy and would embrace critical ideals that could move the ministry forward.
The Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okwa in a bid to ensure more sustainable development in the state for the overall well-being of Deltans, is vigorously pursuing his second term developmental policy anchored on building a stronger Delta.
Having handled a critical assignment as Special Adviser to the Governor in his first term administration, Rt. Hon.(Dr) Martins Okonta, a focused leader and seasoned law maker, is very much abreast with the policy direction of Governor Okowa’s led Administration.
On his assumption of duty as the State Commissioner for Water Resources Development on the 1st day of August, 2019, Tr. Hon. (Dr) Martins Okonta, was immediately presented with the handing over note/brief by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr(Mrs) Felicia Adun who had held sway, the  affairs of the ministry since the dissolution of  the ex-while State Executive Council which  also affected the former commissioner for Water Resources Development, Sir Fidelis Tilije who was reappointed by the Governor as the State Commissioner for Finance.
In his maiden /assumption of duty remarks, the Delta State Commissioner for Water Resources Development, Rt.Hon.(Dr) Martins Okonta charged the staff of the ministry to to redouble their commitments for effective service delivery as well as cooperate with him towards realising the stronger Delta agenda of Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa administration in the water sector.
Continuing, Rt. Hon.(Dr) Okonta who gave the charge during the familiarisation visit to the ministry/assumption of duty said that he would build more synergy with the staff of the ministry in order to take the ministry to an enviable heights. The commissioner, a onetime Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and whose tenure experienced stability in the legislative activities of the House, said that his doors were always open to all the staff of the ministry.
The Water Resources Commissioner who also in his political journey, served as a Special Adviser to the Governor added that no efforts would be spared in the quest to reposition the ministry for the overall good of all.
In her handing over speech, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr(Mrs) Felicia Adun assured the commissioner of the staff’s readiness to work and cooperate with him, just as she congratulated the commissioner on his well deserved appointment. Dr(Mrs) Adun said that the commissioner’s early assumption of duty was enough signal that he was a pragmatic administrator who would bring his wealth of experience to bear in the water sector.
Notwithstanding the fact that the handing over event was between the commissioner and the Permanent Secretary, arrangement have been concluded for the Water Resources Commissioner, Rt.Hon.(Dr) Martins Okonta by the commissioner to meet with the entire management and staff of the ministry in a larger platform as soon as possible.
It is expected that during such platform, more robust relationship would be established with the staff of the ministry and get their pulse as well as ascertain their challenges as well as fashion out measures to unravel them.
Despite the unprecedented achievements of his predecessor, Sir Fidelis Tilije, such as the declaration of the state of emergency on WASH, the signing of the water law by the Governor, the ceaseless partnership with the international agencies/organisations such as the UNICEF, European Union and now the most recent intervention, USAID(United States Agency for International Development) whose collaboration had positively impacted on the water sector in Delta State, there may be some handful work to be done by the new commissioner so that the water sector in the state would be play a leading role to other states in Nigeria, to emulate.
One of such areas he needs to focus more attention is the reactivation of all moribund public water facilities in the state.
Very recently, precisely on the 2nd day of August, 2019, the new commissioner for Water Resources Development, Rt.Hon.(Dr) Martins Okonta, fielded questions from newsmen in his office in Asaba.
Fielding questions from the press, Rt.Hon.(Dr) Martins Okonta assured Deltans that all abandoned public sources of water supply in the state would be reactivated in order to meet the yearnings of Deltans. He said it had become imperative for Deltans to access uninterrupted water supply in the state. The commissioner stated that he would ensure effective implementation of the water law for the overall benefit of the people in the state, adding that there was the need for water to be running in all strategic locations in the state.
Rt.Hon.(Dr) Okonta, who used the opportunity to express his strong determination to impact on the water sector, said that he would soon embark on familiarisation visit to the ministry’s parastatals and zonal offices across the state.
While disclosing that all moribund outstations of the ministry would be reactivated for optimum service delivery, the commissioner appealed to Deltans to always continue to sustain their support for the Okowa administration in its determination to leave enduring legacies of massive development in all parts of the state. He, again, called on the staff of the ministry to shun acts inimical to the progress of the ministry, saying that the staff of the ministry must brace up for effective service delivery just as he stated that he would embrace useful ideas that could contribute to his avowed commitment to give the ministry a face lift.
There is no gainsaying the fact that the new commissioner for Water Resources, based on his vast antecedents, he would add value to the ministry and the present administration. He has started steering the wheel of the leadership of the ministry on a very sound footing to the admiration of the staff of the ministry.
It could be reiterated here, that the Delta State Ministry of Water Resources Development is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the provision of sustainable, affordable and potable water supply, sanitation and hygiene for Deltans and residents in the state.
Considering the concerted efforts of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in the quest to provide sustainable, clean water to Deltans and the enthusiasm of the new commissioner in driving the water sector effectively in order to get more result, all hands must be on deck by the stakeholders so that at the end of the day, the efforts of all and sundry would be crowned with success, that could stand the test of time.

Ogun farmers protest seizure of pepper, tomatoes by customs

Farmers in Ogun state on Monday protested the seizure of 2, 000 baskets of tomatoes and peppers claimed to have been planted and harvested in Ijoun area of Yewa North Local Government Area of the state by the operatives of the Nigerian Customs Service.
The farmers under the umbrella of Fruits and Vegetable Growers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, stormed the NUJ secretariat, Iwe-Irohin House, Abeokuta, calling on federal government to release their farm produce.

The protesters were armed with placards bearing different inscriptions such as: “We are farmers and not smugglers,” “we didn’t vote to be tortured” and “customs wants to kill us,” among others.

His words: “The reason we are here is that, some of our women, our traders on their way to the market with their produce, the customs officials impounded their vehicles carrying their goods.

“They are now auctioning it at their head office. They said it is a federal government directive that the customs should impound tomatoes and peppers planted in Nigeria.

“Our goods are not imported at all. They were planted here in Nigeria. Our produce were impounded in Ijoun in Yewa North local Government. The cost of a basket is N2, 000 and eight vehicles, comprising 250 baskets were impounded.

“The goods were impounded on Sunday evening and they are auctioning it now. We have been to the customs office where it was confirmed to us that our produce were being auctioned at N200 per basket.

“We want the government to come to our aid. We are not smugglers; these goods are not smuggled rice, they are tomatoes and peppers planted here in Ogun state.”

When contacted, the National Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Customs Service, Abuja, John Attah said the farm produce were impounded at the border line, saying the farmers should prove the seized farm produce were locally grown.

He said the seizure was part of the federal government’s directive to close the nation’s land and maritime borders.

Do not cut off your girls' first hair - Professional Hairstylist tells Nigerian Mothers

"Natural hair can be a trend but in honesty, it is not. It is discovering a healthier way to be."

Mrs. Elina E. K. Okporo, popularly known as ELIBRYTE  is a natural hairstylist, a loctician, a hair product formulator and beautician. Though from Obode -Ete in Delta state, she grew up in Lagos, where her passion for hair began.

In her quest to know more about hairs, she did a brief course on trichology, the study of hair and scalp, somewhere outside the shores of Nigeria.

In this interview with Elo Edremoda, she gives in-depth and professional hair care concerns, why women should consider growing their natural hair and why no girl child's first hair should be cut.

Excerpts:

What is the difference between a professional, like you and the hairstylist who does not have your kind of training?

First of all, being a hairstylist is about knowing the techniques, like how to braid.

What makes me different is that I have the know-how, the hair technique and then the biology. It is basically about the biology of hair, what is inside hair, what proteins can help the strength of your hair to stimulate growth.

There is a separation there, knowing the biology of hair, unlike other people who just have the technique. The truth is they both go together. These are things that help you to pick your products. I put certain things together and make products because I know that these are the proteins necessary for hair care and growth stimulation.

How long have you been in this business?

Growing up, my Grandpa bought me a little doll, so that's how I started. But I got into secondary school and used it to hustle. After school, I would fix fellow students' hair and get paid from five to ten naira (#5 to #10) for thread and weaving, respectively, I can't remember anymore. This is more than 20 years ago.

This means hair making is a passion for you?

That's just what it is. This whole thing started when I saw a Caucasian hair on TV. I was a little girl, and then I thought, how come their hair is long and African children's hair are short. That's how I became interested in hair. Basically, it's passion. Even if somebody gives me another job, I won't take it.

What are the types of hair we should know?

There are different types of hair. In terms of finesse, we have different kinds of hair and then we have different curl types, from one to four. In a 1 to 4, we have 1 standing on its own, you have 2 on its own. 3 now ranges from 3A to 3C, then there is 4A to D.

Initially, it was 4A to C, but right now, there is an addition because new curl types are sprouting. And then, those who are the master of it came up to tell us there is now a 4D.

Are you talking generally, including African hairs?

Yes. The African hair mostly, if you are not a mixed race, is the type 4, that's the coil type A-D. Then of course, we have some African hair that can fall into 3C which is kind of curly, rather than coily.

For finesse, we have fine hair, medium, coarse hair. We have people with fine hair naturally.

What's responsible for hair dandruff and thinning?

Dandruff can be an infection. It can be as a result of taking a particular medication. Some antibiotics can give some people dry scalp. For some people, it is transferred from one person to another, using the same comb.

Some people have dry scalp that result in dry hair, so sometimes it is even natural. In terms of dryness, when you deliberately leave your scalp not moisturised, it can do that.

Then, in some products we have drying agents and we are not aware. These are things that make us tick, I mean those who say we want to know the biology of hair.

For thinning hair, your hair gets to be thin as a result of relaxers. No matter how great a relaxer is, if you use it for a couple of years, some people months, the hair gets thin.

Going back to natural hair, nobody should tell anybody that because you don't have your hair relaxed, you will look dirty, old. Some people feel harassed when people tell them, 'you look old because of your natural hair.'  That is absolutely not correct. You don't do that because it's okay to carry your God-given hair.

Now, we have good trainings for natural hair management. We can take care of our natural hair without fear or trembling. If you love the look, being the way God created you, its okay to go natural.

We have also heard that dyeing of hair causes breakage, how true is this?

I'm glad you asked this. Trust me, that's not it at all. When you dye your hair with low ammonia based products, it will not thin out your hair.

Generally, every hair has its voice, we must understand that. You might have 4D and another person has same 4D, but the finesse might be a little different. What you just do when you dye your hair is strip it off the colour that it has. In fact, I have many customers who have dyed their hairs.

We have people who are naturally blonde and their hair is healthy. We have albinos and their hairs are naturally blonde. If they take off the hair colour, the hair won't break. What happens is if you do not take care of your hair with the right products, it will break.

We have bad product knowledge and bad product application. Bad product knowledge will result in bad product application.

Then we have bad handling because sometimes, you can have the best products in this world and you are not having the accurate handling for that hair. Then your hair will result in breakage.

Naturally, there are people with thin hair just as we are born with different heights. When your hair is thin, it makes it easier to manage. But what products are you putting in? Are you putting products that are too heavy for your hair, are you putting the right products that will not break your hair? The hair is already naturally thin and then, you are putting heavy products. Sadly, that is what is going on with a lot of us.

'Ori,' called shea butter and coconut oil usage, how effective are these local or should I say organic products for hair care?

I cannot talk 'ori' out completely. Personally, as a hairstylist, I am not a fan for greasy oil. Ori is one of them, amongst many greasy oils. Greasy oils can help to reduce friction. But in terms of the right proteins, hair foods, which I am about, ori is not it for me. I am not saying it is bad outrightly, but in terms of food, I don't think it is the right option.

What is your opinion on the thoughts of some persons that patronizing extravagant hair salons guarantee best hair care services?

I think whether big or small, you can provide the best hair care if you are knowledgeable about what you are doing. The maximum hair care is not dependent on the size of the salon, neither the look. Of course, it is important you have a neat place and all of that, when you know what you know, you know what you know. It has nothing to do with even your size as a human being, not to mention your shop.

My son is 10 years old. He works here, washes hair, braids, hair fobs. My daughter is twelve. They work with me. I pay them and these are small kids. They have the training that I have given to them and know the right thing. As far as i am concerned, they are small salons put together.

In recent years lots of people, including African celebrities are tilting towards growing natural hair. Is it the best way to go. And if yes, why?

For a lot of people, natural hair can be a trend but in honesty, it is not. It is discovering a healthier way to be. The compounds that are inside relaxers are what drive a lot of people into natural hair. We want to live a healthier lifestyle.

For me, natural hair is a better way to live healthy rather than having chemicals in your hair. That's why the products we use on the hair are natural. They are organic, neither harmful to the hair or the person doing the hair.

People complain that it is too expensive to maintain natural hair, how so?

Natural hair is not expensive, I hear that a lot. It not as expensive as some people make it. There are simple remedies you can use with your stylist. It's only when you want to buy your products at once, it looks expensive. If you buy the products you need, it will take you a while to finish them. If you want a healthy perming, you will spend quite a lot.

For natural hair, you have your do-it-yourself (DIYs) to fall back on because your professional stylist will guide you to make sure you can take care of your hair when either of you are not around. Like me, it is not easy to have a booking with me. I have to give them tips to help them take care of their hair without me. Sometimes, they can't get my products, there are cheap stuffs they can get to wash their hair with, not the very expensive shampoos and all.

I particularly have a problem with braids and beads on children, especially those who are about six months to two years old. When is the best time to start braids or weaves on infants, is it even proper?

I have an issue generally with braiding on everybody, how much more children. You can braid your child's hair, but what kind of tension are you applying on the roots of the hair. Sadly, a lot of people don't apply the right tension to the hair, so it makes it really challenging. If you must braid a child's hair, the braids have to be really scanty.

It gets scary when I see a lot of children with funny beads, the charm looks like a shrine. I've never been to a shrine before but I have watched Nollywood, so I see the way the shrine looks. If the child must braid hair, braid it scanty.

And then tension, tension is how tight the hair is. Make it almost zero tension. The child should not feel a thing. Even as simple as corn rows that they want to do on a child, they go like this (tight) and the child loses hair. Then you see rashes, boils and some can't sleep. It is the braid technique that is important. Relatively, you know how big a child's scalp is. It should not carry more than ten to fifteen braids and then packed. Some of the kids drag the hair when crying.

The truth is that we should avoid it, but it is not easy to deal with some children's hair, some children have hair. Considering the way we are, how busy mothers can be, especially Delta mothers, it is not easy dealing with packing it everyday. That (braid) will leave the hair in, there is a word we use 'protective' hairstyle or braid. You protect the hair, but most braids sadly damage the hairs. If the tension can be right, why not.

What's the myth behind cutting off babies', talking about girl children, first hairs?

Thank you for asking this question. When I had my daughter, her hair was falling, it wasn't growing well. She had this big Chanel O at the back. In the middle, she had this small hair. I used to call her 'hare-hare'. Then, people came to me, 'cut the hair, a child's first hair should be cut'. My response to them was 'if I cut this first hair, I will cut the first nose, ear, eye, everything first about her, so that the real ones will grow. Unless that happens, then I cannot cut the hair'.

To answer your question, it is absolutely wrong to do that. You don't cut a child's (girl) hair, unless maybe you have a fetish thing. As a professional hairstylist, from me to you and to the world, it is wrong to cut your child's first hair. If you have that notion, it is absolutely wrong to do it.

Do you have any advice to ladies on hair care?

Take care of your hair. The bible says that a woman's hair is a glory unto her. It is okay to have a girl child have her hair done. There is a confidence it gives. Give it the right attention, get professional stylists to do your hair.

Then, you stylist, try to get better. Go for trainings, things to help you get better at what you do. If you love what you do, you will want to get better at it.

Flooding: Obodogugu residents want Okowa to terminate firm’s contract

Mr. Onyeka Okeke is not a happy man. He is a victim of the ravaging flood caused by torrential rains in parts of Delta State. The furious flood has wreaked havoc on his property including his means of livelihood.

Okeke who is the chairman of landlord association in Obodogugu phase II of Okpanam town in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state is blaming the contractor handling the state government’s erosion control project, Tractix Engineering Company for his woes.

He said the flood channeled by the contracting firm was affecting homes in the area especially when there is downpour, adding that fences, buildings among others have been destroyed each time the flood come calling.

“Two years ago, precisely on May 2, 2017, the same company did same thing. I wrote petition to the governor to come and see the sand they used in blocking the waterway. Later, the flood came and destroyed my house, vehicle and everything.

It was only the cloth I wore that day that was with me. Later I spent N11 million to rebuild my house and other things. To my greatest surprise, only N500,000 was given to me by the state government maybe as compensation.

“In 2018, the same company destroyed my fence, and when I approach them, they kept mum, and nothing was done. I have to rebuild my fence.

“Now, this year, the worse again happened. In the morning of Thursday June 13, 2019 morning I saw another hip of sand along the water way. I approach the supervisor of the company who refused to speak but one of the workers confided in me that, the sand was used to prevent flood from encroaching on the casting, which they had done.

“Few hours later, I was in the shop, when I received a phone call during that heavy rain, that water has taken over my house. Behold, when I got there, I could not recognise my house. My two cars were floating, all my livestock died, my fence was already down.

“Over 200 birds, 10 goats and a dog were killed by the flood. Not only were they dead but they were swept away by the flood. As it is now, I have nowhere to sleep,” he lamented.

Also, a resident in the area, Mrs. Onyebuchi Dolphin narrated her ordeal saying: “I was at work, when a friend of my in the compound called me that I should come home, that flood has taken over my house.

“When I got home, I saw my mattress, a box containing my school certificates and my children school bags floating on the water outside. I thank God that my two children were not at home because the fence fell on my window side which also the affected the house.”

A single mother of four, Blessing Ojika, narrated how flood destroyed “all our property, even my pot of soup was washed away by flood.

“The children and I escaped death, I did not know how we scaled the fence to other side, it was God that saved us.”

As a result, Okeke and some residents called on the state government led by Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to come to the aid of the community and save landlords in the area, alleging that activities of the construction company were denying landlords of their means of livelihood.

They appealed to the governor to terminate the contract of Tractix, insisting that the action of the company in its bid to remedy the flooding situation has caused more harm than good to residence of the emerging community.
