Changing the political narratives and directives is a process
that must be carried out by both politicians and electorates through a people
oriented democratic process that must entails principle of justice and fair
play by all.
The electorates must begin in earnest to look for the decent politician or leader
who has sense
of decorum and humility and sensitive to the plight and
aspirations of the people so as to build a relationship of confidence on each
other.
The 2014 staggered election of Ekiti and Osun states
governorship elections brought some kind of hope and confidence by INEC to
Nigerians and international communities, was an indication that Nigeria as a
country was getting it right gradually because in those elections, the
electorates voted for the candidates of their choice without intimidation and
this was attested to by the international observers who monitored the two
states elections. Having seen the fairness and level playing ground provided
for the participating parties by INEC, the then incumbent governor, Dr. Kayode
Fayemi without any fray nerves congratulated the governor elect, Mr. Ayodele
Fayose without any form of litigations.
But the 2018 staggered elections of the above two states
recently conducted by INEC, without mincing words, has brought some kind of
regrets and lack of confidence to Nigerians, including the international
communities because the states elections were characterized by intimidations
and vote buying, as result, there are ongoing litigations, meaning there are
lapses and all concerned stakeholders are beginning to get worry over 2019
general elections.
It is our considered opinion that, changing the narratives,
we must understand what is good governance and what it takes to run a good
government and changing the orientation of the electorates towards that
requires a lot of education and sensitization by genuine civil society groups
and other stakeholders who are sensitive to the plight and aspirations of the
people towards good governance.
Candidly speaking, we know it is herculean task that need
every genuine stakeholder’s effort to get the right orientation among the
people.
Recently Hon Rita Orji, member representing Ajeromi Ifelodun
federal constituency had suggested in a fora that the only way out is for the
decent politician and electorate to come together and work collectively for the
progress of the nation democratic process because changing the narratives in
the current day politics will attract enemies and therefore advised that the
era of go and make money without quality leadership and representation must be
jettison by all. She noted that the decent politician might not be rich, but
changing the political narratives is to ensure that the electorates must not
have the mindset of selling their votes, while in different foras, Dr. Vincent
Omovusu and president of the Isoko Development Union (IDU) Women’s wing, Lagos
branch, Mrs. Mary Nwaru had advocated for good governance and urged the
electorates to vote for credible candidates with impeccable characters come 2019
general elections.
Therefore
we appealed to all our political leaders, including other stakeholders to come
together and work collectively by continually educating and sensitizing the
electorates on the need to vote for the right persons without enticement and
inducement by money bags politicians to have moral standard to ask for good
governance to help our democratic process.
