A veteran political activist and
social crusader, Madam Alice Ukoko is dead. She died on the 19, November 2016
after a brief illness.
A Brief History
Madam Alice Ukoko was born at Warri
in Delta State in 1948 and she is paternally Uzere in Isoko South Local
Government Area of Delta State. She had a nursing training in 1971 to 1973 in
the united kingdom and later had a bachelor of laws (LLB Hons, London) and
became a professional graduate member of the institute of personal management
of Nigeria among others.
Between 1981 and 1987, she was formerly known and addressed
as Mrs. Alice Ugono and she had six years working experience in Nigeria where
she was greatly enriched and considered herself well informed on the challenges
facing her country (Nigeria).
Madam Ukoko is a political activist who has worked
voluntarily since 1994 when the women of Africa, a non governmental
organization was founded as women of Nigeria international (WONI) it is on
record that the WONI participated fully in the international campaign to end
direct military dictatorship in Nigeria following the annulment of June 12,
1993 presidential election.
At that period, she campaigned
extensively and engaged fully in the activities of pro-democracy groups in the
united kingdom and she led a powerful delegation to the commonwealth
ministerial action group on July 11, 1997 to represent civil society voices to
inform them about the human rights abuses in Nigeria and to raise international
awareness to the brutal military-civilian dictatorship in Nigeria, the
improverishment and abuse of the rights of the people of a country so rich and
yet so poor.
As a Niger Deltan of international
repute, she campaigned vigorously against the environmental destruction and
degredation of her land (Isoko in particular) and abuse of the rights of her
people as members of the human race.
As a dogged social crusader and political activist who wants
fair treatment for her people, she ventured into the political arena in 2007
and contested the governorship position of Delta state on the platform of the
labour party and lost narrowly to the PDP.
Until her death, her works include, provision of advocacy,
cultural mediation and advice services of Africans in the united kingdom. She
left behind five children who were educated in the UK.
According to her family, the service will be held on Sunday
18th December 2016 at St Giles Church.
May her soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
