NIGERIA as a
country will be 57 years old by October 1st 2017. The question now is that 57 years
now on the line, are we at the right place in terms growth?
Looking at the
above question, there is need to say that Nigeria as a nation has moved on inspite of challenges facing
the country. On this note, Isoko mirror reporters decided to sample some
opinions from the public in view of the current prevailing challenges facing
the nation. Here are some of the opinions sampled. Read on:

Mr. Omohakpor
Enaye,
The problem of
Nigeria since independence is so serious, for example India obtained her
Independence from Britain in 1947, and we obtained Independence in 1960, the
years different is not much.
Today, India is
self reliance in agriculture. They are third world country and have one of the
best sub-marine in the world, also one of the best in the technological
industry
India has gone
very far, but Nigeria is still behind. The reason is not far fetch, we were
given Federal system of government at Independence, but we are not practicing
federalism, ‘I study in America so I specialized in American government/, but
our country is not practicing federalism.
What the country
needed at the moment is true federalism where all the component parts of the
nation will feel a sense of belonging to enhance rapid development of the
nation and do away with nepotism resulting from inept leadership. The young
ones should begin to ask questions and demands answers from the older ones why
nigeria as a nation is not progressing the way it should be.

Nigeria is
improving in Agriculture but they are still importing, there is no unity,
there’s anarchy everywhere, there is struggle for restructuring,
there is no
security in Nigeria there is a lot of kidnapping, Boko Haram bombing many
places. In the North East, they have not even released the remaining chibok
school girls until now. Nigeria is not improving in terms of petroleum, because
we have a lot of refineries, but still importing.

In the area of
employment, I don’t think they are doing anything good, in terms of
agriculture, they are trying a little, in unity they are very poor in that
area.
The electricity,
is even the worst,
it is only people that are rich that are enjoying their life
with generator, but the poor people are suffering of electricity.
It is in the hand
of the government to find means to call BEDC to order.

The only time I
will say we ever had a political system of government is just about 4-5 years
during the time of Shagari, but now the question is are we in politics since
1960 till date. If you look at it very well, despite the fact that the
electoral commission (i.e INEC) are responsible for election in Nigeria, those
that makes laws as still the National house of Assembly, they call INEC an
independent therefore suppose to make her laws, administer it, and regulate it
by itself but instead, commission is bound to follow, can we now say our
politics in Nigeria is independent? That is to say we have not yet moved into a
complete political system.
The only way out
is that things should be done in the right way. Lawyers should work as lawyers,
the military to his job, the police should be responsible for policing the
country. A person who is a Doctor is being appointed as a Minister of
Agriculture, as a result of politics

What we need in
Nigeria is leadership. A leader is a person in a position of trust and does not
take advantage of it, he thinks of those he leads, he would not appoint the
wrong person if he thinks of the interest of his followers in general.
We should have a
law that looks at everybody equally, the mechanism that will carry out the
implementation of the law must be standard. If the law is standard the person
who has been appointed will not embezzle public funds because he knows the law
will focus on him.

When we talk about
political issues since Independence, 1960, it has been the bedrock of our
problem. We have had issues of civil war and political instability. When
government comes into power, they intend suggesting things to solve problems,
this is because we are not pro-active, we are not thinking ahead due to the
fact that the masses are not informed enough in order for them to contribute to
development and political restructuring.
There is no way we
can get out from these problems without looking at our economy. Nigerians have
little knowledge on Economy issues because they are not well informed.
