WArri - A socio-political pressure group, under the aegis of Niger Delta Youth Advocacy for Peace and Development (NDYAPD) has said youths in the region are not given to carrying of arms, as it is widely claimed.
The group, led by its national convener, Comrade Eki Greg, stated this when it presented an award to its grand patron, Chief (Sir) Patrick Yalaju (JP), the Adolor of Warri kingdom on Sunday, 27 May.
Emphasizing that youths of the Niger Delta only seek measures that will benefit the area and by extension, the entire nation, the national convener called for support on the part of elders and other well-meaning Nigerians, to young people.
"As a people, the youths of the region believe that the use of arms will only retard growth and development of the geographical territory called the Niger Delta. Hence, our resolve to peaceful and intellectual advocacy that will be beneficial in both the region and the nation al large without destruction of our national resources," Greg stated in his speech.
Meanwhile, Chief Yalaju has charged people of the Niger Delta to shun ethnicity and violence so as to ensure sustainable growth and development in the region.
Recalling moves in time past for the establishment of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) and the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), he advised the group to pursue their aims with one accord.
"We should not achieve aims and objectives through fights or violence. We should always achieve them through dialogue. I want us to unite, see ourselves as one, one Nigeria. We should not think of splitting Nigeria. We should see to the growth of this country.
"Have one mind, have one course. Do not do this with ethnic sentiments. Lets be the town criers of Nigeria," the former OMPADEC boss said.
Responding to the award of recognition and appreciation as "grand patron" of the NDYAPD, Chief Yalaju promised to facilitate means, in terms of reaching out to individuals who will support the group.
In a brief remark, the Hon Commissioner representing Delta state in the Federal Character Commission, Chief Emmanuel Ebimami commended the group and its stand for advocacy through dialogue, enjoining them to remain steadfast in the course.
The NDYAPD, formed in 2014, is aimed at engaging government in intellectual dialogue and conflict resolution on issues pertaining to the Niger Delta rather than the use of arms.
Others present at the occasion include members of the Fritters Association, a group of friends, who include Chief Samuel Uge, Mr. R. A. Oguseri, Prince Patrick Mokologhor, Sir Idemudia, Mr. Dickson Imila, Chief Ogoiyibo.
