The Nigerian maritime university located at Okerenkoko, Delta
state is now set to commence admission of students into the university for the
2017/2018 academic year and to start lectures on April.
This was one of the highlights of the meeting of the Niger-Delta
inter-ministerial committee held recently to assess progress on the
implementation of the federal government new vision for the Niger-Delta.
The highlights of the meeting was made available through a press
statement issued on the 10th March 2018 by the senior special
assistant to the vice president on media and publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande.
The meeting which was chaired by the vice president, Professor
Yemi Osinbajo receives a lot of reports on some of the ongoing development
projects being implemented in the Niger-Delta region.
The statement further narrated that the NDDC has in 2017,
completed 372 projects and setup job placement centres to engage 200,000 youths
in the region and collaboration with the federal government in positioning the
maritime university and part of its obligation as a host state, the Delta state
government has donated two 500KVA generators to the university.
The meeting which was also briefed on the arrival of one set of modular
refinery package shipment noting that it would be installed in Delta state
while the second set which will arrive on April would be installed in Rivers
state. The statement noted that the operations of the modular refineries would
include the involvement of communities where they are located to ensure that
communities benefit directly as part of the government obligation to create
jobs and engage youths of the region.
In the same vein, the statement noted that the final draft of the
strategic implementation work plan (SIWP) which will provide the framework for
the development of the Niger-Delta was also received by the committee.
