Nigeria policeman arrested while planning to kidnap boy for 5 Million ransom

The recent revelation that some corrupt policemen under the Rivers State Police Command had been directly engaging in abduction of citizens for ransom, now appears not to be restricted to the state as facts from Kogi State indicate. It emerged that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Kogi State Police Command arrested two policemen in Kogi State (now dismissed), 30-year-old corporal Suleiman Isiaka and 31-year-old Ibrahim James, and who had also served under the Assistant General of Police (AIG) in charge of zone 8, Lokoja, had used their AK-47 rifles and ammunition to carry out the attempted abduction of a five-year-old boy, Victor Nathaniel.
kidanppers arrested hotel in kogi
They were said to have worked with a syndicate that demanded for a N5 million ransom. The group operated from Early Best Hotel, Ayingba, Kogi State. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ali Janga told Sunday Sun that the two ex-policemen collaborated with an ex-navy rating, Ordinary Seaman Bature Habila Jesses, to commit the alleged crime.

Janga stated that on October 6, 2017, the commander of SARS in the state, Supol Baba Gana Bukar and SARS personnel acting on information made available to the police through information stormed the hotel at Ayingba and arrested the first suspect around 5:45a.m. The police team recovered arms and ammunitions.
Also, it was through information that one of the suspects, Shehu Agba, who is a cousin of the father of the victim masterminded the abduction and also told the ex-policemen how to collect the N5 million ransom from his cousin. It was Agba who involved the ex-policemen by urging them to use their AK47 rifles to intimidate their victims.
The SARS commander, Supol Baba Gana Bukar, added that the two ex-policemen used the Opel car with registration number, Kogi GWO 129 SA, belonging to one of them for the operation.
Bukar said that his operatives took the first suspect to Akowo Nathaniel, the father of the victim at Ayingba, who confirmed that the suspected kidnapper had been threatening them, saying that if they did not do his bidding, either himself, wife or son would be kidnapped.
The two ex-policemen were attached to Forward Operation Base in Bauchi State, under the AIG Zone 8, Lokoja. Information gathered by Sunday Sun from sources within the Kogi police command revealed that they had been involved in other abduction cases.
policemen planning abduction arrested
When Sunday Sun spoke with one of the suspects, Suleiman Isiaka, he said: “I joined the police on March 1, 2008 through the Kaduna State Police Command. Yes, I have been involved in several kidnapping operations. It was, Shehu Agba, the cousin of the father of the boy who arranged this operation. He said the father of the boy can pay the ransom of N5 million if we kidnapped his son.
Also, the second suspect, Corporal Ibrahim James who joined the force on February 1, 2010 after undergoing training at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, confessed that he had been using his AK47 for kidnapping operations. He added that it was his colleague, Suleiman Isiaka that got him involved in the abduction incident.

He said: “I quickly followed them with my AK47 rifle which I signed for from my Division. I carried out the operation at Ayingba before the SARS personnel rounded us up at the hotel at Ayingba.
On his part, Shehu Agba, 32, who hails from Egune community in Dekina L.G.A Kogi State, said he initiated the abduction of the boy as a way of avenging the hurt he felt when the father of the victim turned down his request for money.
His words: “I needed some money from the father of the victim, but he refused to give me. So I arranged with the two policemen on how to kidnap his son and make him pay N5 million ransom. We planned to kidnap him on October 6, 2017 around 5:45 am at the hotel when the SARS personnel surrounded us while we were inside the car.” I have confessed to the policeman” he said.
A commercial driver, Daniel John, 27, got roped in when the suspects hired his vehicle, without his being aware that they were on a mission to kidnap somebody. Apparently, the presence of the policemen with their guns deceived him as to the true nature of the reason for hiring his vehicle.
boy kidnapped
Obviously relieved, the father of the boy narrated how he had been receiving threats prior to the abduction. He said: “I have been receiving a threat by kidnappers who said that they need N5 million from me. I received several phone calls and threats from the kidnappers. I was shocked on October 6, 2017, when I suddenly saw the SARS commander Supol Baba Gana Bukar and SARS personnel with five suspects who confessed to have threatened me and wanted to kidnap my five-year-old son.
It was God that fought for me. My biggest surprise was that my cousin, Shehu Agba, who was a regular visitor to my family and who I have assisted that was the one who masterminded the attempted abduction.”

Soldiers on operation arrests Bishop 18 others for robbery. Kidnapping

A Bishop named Iwah Mfon and 18 others have been arrested for armed robbery, kidnapping and cult activities in different areas of Akwa Ibom State by troops of the Nigerian Army in the ongoing Operation Crocodile Smile II in the South-South and South-West regions.
Some of the suspects identified as Saviour Friday, Nsika Udoh, Akan Monday, Abak Obong and Oyobong Frank were arrested by troops of 2 Brigade and had been handed over to the police.
This was disclosed by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, and 6 Division spokesman, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu.
Iliyasu said Mfon and the other suspects were arrested for allegedly terrorising Abak Obong, Oruk Atai and Ikot Obong areas in the Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of the state.
According to Iliyasu, bishop was the supposed financier of “wanted criminals terrorising” the areas.
He said, “The increased presence of troops both on land and on waterways helped to prevent any criminal activity.
“The troops arrested Mfon on October 14. He is believed to be the financier of wanted criminals and he was arrested at Ikot Ibekwe community in the Ukanafun LGA. The suspect is volunteering information about gangs of kidnappers and cult members linked to him.”
Iliyasu also said about 120,000 litres of stolen fuel was recovered from oil thieves in Rivers State.
He said troops of 29 Battalion intercepted two trucks in the Uzuaku area, laden with 55,000 and 30,000 litres of fuel.
Iliyasu said, “A patrol team also discovered a re-activated illegal refinery in the Doroko area on October 17; and the site was destroyed by the troops. The troops also destroyed 53 jerrycans of 25 litres and 20 drums of 250 litres in the Akinima and Okrika areas respectively.”

Monkeypox: The return of an ailment without cure 39 years after

The current suspected monkey pox outbreak in Nigeria, which has now spread to seven states, is the third in the nation’s history. There were a total of three recorded human cases previously  in 1971 and 1978 according to the Centres for Disease Control, CDC.The virus was first isolated from colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name “monkey pox.”
The first recorded human case of monkey pox was in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox. There were also reports of cases in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Monkeypox
The following year, 1971, there was one case in Cote d’Ivoire and two cases in Nigeria. Then in 1976 there were two cases in Cameroon and again in Nigeria, in 1978, one case was recorded. Since then, monkey pox has remained strictly a disease of Central and Western African countries, except in 2003, when 47 cases were reported in the US.
The 2003 US outbreak is the only time monkey pox infections in humans were documented outside of Africa.   Most of those affected had close contact with pet prairie dogs believed to have had contact with animals that were imported.
The current outbreak in Nigeria is of West African origin and associated with milder disease, fewer deaths, and limited human-to-human transmission. Studies have shown that the monkey pox virus can cause a fatal illness in humans and, although it is similar to human smallpox which has been eradicated, it is much milder.
A professor of virology and former President, Nigeria Academy of Science, Professor Oyewale Tomori, described as a shame Nigeria’s inability to diagnose monkey pox.
Tomori, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard from the US, remarked: “It is indeed a shame for us in this country that, nearly 60 years after our so called independence, we are still unable to confirm a case of most diseases without sending our samples to laboratories overseas.
“And which overseas, are we talking about. Senegal! Just imagine. And there was a time when our laboratory system was able to confirm many of these diseases, now, none of these diseases are we able to confirm.
“We do not have appropriate and well equipped laboratory facilities to definitely confirm suspected cases. Samples have been sent to Dakar and plans are being made to send additional samples to the smallpox laboratories of the WHO Collaborating Center for Smallpox and other Poxvirus Infections at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta”.
Causes
Monkey pox is a rare disease caused by infection with monkey pox virus, that belongs to the same family of viruses that includes variola virus (the cause of smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus.
The natural reservoir remains unknown. However, African rodent species are expected to play a role in transmission.
The monkey pox virus can cause an illness with a generalised vesicular skin rash, fever, and painful jaw swelling. In previous outbreaks, it has led to death in about 1-10 per cent of infected cases.
There is no specific medicine to treat the disease, but intensive supportive care helps patients to recover fully.
Confirmation of suspected cases
We do not have appropriate and well equipped laboratory facilities to definitely confirm suspected cases. Samples have been sent to Dakar and plans are being made to send additional samples to the smallpox laboratories of the WHO Collaborating Center for Smallpox and other Poxvirus Infections at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta.
Rapid spread
I think it is too early to say  that we are having a rapid spread of the disease as we do not have laboratory confirmation of the reported cases from different states. However, this is not to say that the disease cannot be spread easily, especially from an infected person.
Largest outbreak
The largest outbreak ever reported in Africa was the 1996 DR Congo outbreak, with more than 70 cases. The outbreak lasted for a period of one year. During the outbreak, there was a significant association of human contacts with squirrel (trapping, preparing raw meat for cooking) and human-to-human transmission through direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or cutaneous or mucosal lesions of infected persons.
In Africa, there are reports of human infections associated with handling of infected monkeys, Gambian giant rats and squirrels, with rodents being the major reservoir of the virus. Eating inadequately cooked meat of infected animals is a possible risk factor.
Cause for concern
There is definitely a danger and cause for concern, as between 1- 10 percent of people infected with monkeypox may die, most deaths occurring in younger age groups. However, we need to confirm the cases before we think of declaring a national emergency. If we have to declare an emergency at all, it is to declare emergency for the poor state of national health. Otherwise, we will be declaring emergencies for every outbreak. And we have many in our country- Lassa, Meningitis and pardon me, and the most severe and devastating disease – corruption.
There is no cure
In as much as the government has taken appropriate steps and measures – alerting citizens, calling for calm, sending samples for laboratory testing, contacting international agencies for assistance- our national response is adequate. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease, although it is known that people who have received smallpox vaccine suffer a mild form of the disease. But remember smallpox vaccination was stopped in the 1980s, so should people born after that time contract the disease, they are likely to suffer a severe form.
What to do to prevent infection
First is to prevent transmission from animal to man through contact with any of the animals listed as natural hosts of the virus – monkeys, rodents, rats, squirrels etc. Those handling sick animals, raw or infected tissues, must wear gloves and other appropriate protective clothing. We must thoroughly cook all animal products (blood, meat) before eating.
During a monkey pox outbreak, we must avoid close and direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or cutaneous or mucosal lesions of an infected person. Since there is neither a vaccine nor a specific treatment for the disease, you need to raise awareness of the risk factors and educate people about the measures that must be taken to reduce exposure to the virus.
Also upgrade our surveillance for the disease to rapidly identify new cases and isolate them. We must implement standard infection control in our health facilities, while providing our health workers with gloves and protective equipment when taking care of ill people.
We cannot over stress the need for regular hand washing, especially after caring for or visiting sick people. Finally, we must keep our environment clean and free from invasion by rats and rodents.

Since billionaire Victor Okafor aka ‘King of Money’ (Ezego) died mysteriously in December 1999 an accident while returning home for Christmas and to celebrate his birthday, things have allegedly not remained the same.
One would think lots of property-hijacking and fights amongst relatives would have taken place after the billionaire’s death in Ihiala town, Anambra state. But this is not so, according to reports. The N500m mansion belonging to the late billionaire is said to be abandoned over his connection with the dreaded Okija shrine.
Ezeugo compound
imirror reports that the mansion which houses lots of golden chairs and tables, expensive fabrics, rugs, electronics, electrical appliances, abandoned vehicles and others worth millions of naira is said to have remained untouched since the billionaire’s death.
Even with the high rate of robbery in the area where the mansion is situated, no robber seem to be interested in touching the building or the amenities it houses, even without security men in sight. All for the fear of being dealt with by the deity which is assumed to have killed the billionaire owner.
Our source gathered that the billionaire was said to have attracted the anger of the deity after he allegedly could not defend himself over a report by one of his kinsmen who reportedly dragged him to the shrine over business transaction which he alleged that Okafor had cheated him.

The will ‘Ezego’ had prepared was not read because the lawyer who prepared the will one Barrister Barnabas Igwe was brutally murdered with his wife.
